Combatting Boredom: My Story

Zen Habits has a great post that got me thinking - 6 Effective Ways to Combat Boredom, a guest post from Todd Goldfarb of the We The Change blog.

From the 10,000 foot level, boredom not only dominates our online culture but also acts as a silent black hole among humanity draining excitement and motivation from our lives.

That really struck a chord with me; over the last year or so, I have been working to be more conscious and purposeful in everything that I do. I have developed a greater sense of awareness of myself and everything around me. I try to (generally) minimize my aimless internet surfing and feedreading, my personal information stores are more portable and accessible -these are just a few examples of how my time spent on the internet is more purposeful and efficient.

Part of why I wanted to participate in Blog365 was to be a producer, not a consumer. I want to do and make stuff, not just consume stuff. Don’t get me wrong, reading is a great thing and I think it is fine to do, but along with that, I believe that you need to contribute a little bit back to the internet.? It takes a different sort of thinking and comprehension to write than it does to blindly turn pages (you can thank my Government professor for that one).

Give Todd’s post a read, I think that he hits on a lot of very good simple things for all of us to do, things that will add more meaning to the time you spend on the internet and how you spend every day.

Bonus Read: 10 Reasons Why Digg Users Should “Digg” More Consciously - I think he hits on a lot of the reasons why I avoid Digg (most of the time) and other websites of that sort. A lot of what comes on those sites is trashy, negative, and doesn’t add meaning or knowledge to what is out there already.
