Time Warner Cable Testing Metered Bandwidth

So apparently, Time Warner wants to start charging users that go over a standard monthly bandwidth quota. They are going to be testing this plan out in Beaumont (!) before expanding it. I shouldn’t have to tell you that this is 10 kinds of bad idea.

Already the US lags behind much of Europe and parts of Asia in internet penetration, this sort of money grab will only serve to set us farther behind. Money grab is a pretty fair characterization of this nonsense given the estimated overage rate of $7.42 USD per GB!? There is no way that sort of a price can be justified as cost recovery in any way, shape or form - that is pure profit. This sort of model is the sort of thing that makes people dislike their cell phone carriers so much (think about it, have you ever heard of someone saying how much they just love their carrier?)
